What is Central Venous Catheter?

In simple terms, a central venous catheter is a thin long tube, which is inserted to a vein, usually below the color bone, neck or groin, which is then threaded to a bigger vein, like the Superior and inferior Vena Cava. The advantage of this is that it can stay longer in the body, as compared to the usual IV. It is mostly used when a patient is in shock and needs immediate insertion of fluids. This is then used as a port, to either draw blood or give medications and drugs, removing the hurdle of having to insert a needle every time. It is an extremely delicate process and so requires a set of guidelines to be followed, to avoid infection.

· Availability of acceptable equipment, to make the necessary insertion on the tunneled catheter.

· Avoiding other infections, including antibiotics, aseptic practices of the practitioner, selecting the inserting site, etc.

· Selecting the size and type of catheters needed for the procedure, keeping in mind other factors like what is the catheter needed for.

· Patient position for the procedure, to minimize mechanical injuries.

· Verification of the equipment used.

· Fixation and maintenance of the catheter.
